Client: Kenya Electricity Transmission Company
Location: Kenya
POWER is providing technical design review and construction supervision services for approximately 110 km of new 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines and five new substations for the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). The Nairobi Ring project will expand the transmission network around Nairobi to reduce technical losses and improve voltage conditions to better cope with a growing demand on the local system. The project includes the following components:
- Construction of approximately 100 km of new 400 kV double-circuit transmission line from the new Suswa Substation northwest of Nairobi to the new Isinya Substation to its south.
- Construction of a new 220 kV spur line of approximately 4 km to the new Ngong Substation to the west of Nairobi.
- Construction of approximately 5 km of 220 kV underground cable between the expanded Dandora Substation to the new Koma Rock Substation northeast of Nairobi.
- Construction of two new 220 kV substations at Suswa and Isinya.
- Construction of three new 220/66 kV substations at Koma Rock, Athi River (southeast of Nairobi), and Ngong.
POWER has established an office in Nairobi for this project and is providing an on-site team of construction supervisors and inspectors for both the lines and substations. Our design review services include the verification of electrical system studies and of the final designs for overhead and underground transmission lines and substations. This design review also includes technology transfer to the KETRACO staff in the form of on-site training. In addition, a local subcontractor is providing supervision of the implementation of the approved Environmental Social Management Plan and Resettlement Action Plan developed under Kenya national regulations.
